Drilling threatens Wadden ecosystem

Many ecosystems worldwide are under pressure. The Wadden Sea – a natural monument with UNESCO status – off the Dutch, German and Danish coasts is a prominent example. Numerous human activities threaten nature here. This month, Favas.net went on exploration. There is still a drilling platform for the extraction of natural gas right north of the island of Ameland (NAM platform AWG, one of many). For years, NGOs and associations such as the Waddenvereniging have been warning that greenhouse gases are released during the extraction and combustion of natural gas. These gases cause the greenhouse effect, which, as is known, causes sea levels to rise. An enormous threat to the preservation of a shallow sea like the Wadden Sea. In addition, toxic substances can be released from the soil. Furthermore, toxic substances are used during the production of natural gas. Due to these types of activities, the UNESCO status of the Wadden Sea is now under discussion.

The work of the Waddenvereniging has many facets. This association strongly oppose the damage to the Wadden Sea ecosystem and aim to make it more robust.
