Local money for the community
More and more cities cherish their local money (local, complementary currency). With local money, citizens, entrepreneurs and governments in their community (neighbourhood, city or region) co-operate to build an economy that enhances environment, climate and society. Their aim is the creation of an alternative for the current financial system that causes environmental problems, climate change and increasing poverty. Many initiatives have already been set up worldwide. This month, our attention falls on the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The Social Trade Organisation (STRO) is carrying out a project here to stimulate the local economy with its own currency – the ‘Utrecht Euro’. The technical basis for this is the Cyclos payment software developed by STRO. Henk van Arkel, founding father of the Utrecht Euro, shared his infectious vision in various Dutch media. His STRO is also active worldwide with projects in Spain, Italy, South Africa and Latin America, among others.
