Police brutality is part of a vicious cycle
According to the Dutch professor Han van der Maas, the “War on Drugs” in the US is leading to modern slavery. In the newspaper De Volkskrant earlier this month, he said the widespread police brutality against black Americans is part of a vicious cycle of poverty, drug crime, prosecution and imprisonment, and new poverty again. According to him, upward forces such as education and work lose out to these forces. If Favas.net understands Professor Van der Maas correctly, the Black Lives Matter movement continues to focus too much on symbols and language. While this is important to address, it does little to challenge and effectively combat oppression.
