Unprecedented aid cuts
Western countries have been cutting humanitarian and development aid at a rapid and massive scale. It is now clear that this is leading to life-threatening situations for the most vulnerable people. Recent cuts by the United States (USAID, 90%), the United Kingdom (40%), France (37%), Belgium (30%) and the Netherlands (30%) will lead to a global health crisis of unprecedented proportions, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). This month, Karel Hendriks, director of the Dutch branch of MSF/DWB, said that the cuts to emergency aid are already having devastating consequences. Clinics run by other aid organizations are being forced to close their doors and vaccination campaigns are being halted.
