Belgian coast ruled by commercial property
On our way this month along the Belgian coast, it once again becomes clear how its sea view is determined by hyper-commercial real estate. Although the value of coastal property has not increased spectacularly in recent years, the prices are still considerable. For example, the average price per square meter in Ostend is 3833 euros (Immoweb, June 1, 2025). But a sample shows that in various places along the Zeedijk, well over 5000 euros must be paid. And that applies to almost the entire immense wall of apartment buildings that cover the vast majority of the coastline. But we were also able to identify an exception. And that is the Villa Doris in Middelkerke (approximately seven kilometres west of Ostend). The beautiful building from 1899 in neo-rococo style was protected as a monument by Royal Decree in 1980. It is owned by the municipality of Middelkerke.
