Police mega-operation in Penha
Rio de Janeiro, January 24, 2025 – It happened again in the Penha neighbourhood, our regular Brazilian case. In all the years of Favas.net’s research in Penha (since 2010), this neighbourhood has been plagued by violence, both stemming from local crime and government brutality (and combinations of both). An example from the news (yesterday) was the mega-operation in Penha and Alemão. The military-police action was intended to counter the advance of factions and the theft of combat vehicles and cargo. Unfortunately, with several (innocent) victims as a result, including a young man who was drinking his coffee at the local BRT station and even a woman who was lying next to her son in bed at home.
