Transport poverty is increasing
Citizens with minimal incomes are facing raising difficulties. For example in the Netherlands, from 1 January 2019 the low VAT rate will be increased from 6% to 9%. This means that many daily necessities such as food and transport become a lot more expensive. For example, costs of a 10 km trip in Amsterdam by public transport to the regular base rate will increase from 2.45 to 2.58 euros. According to the Dutch National Institute for Family Finance Information (Nibud), single people with a so-called Legal Social Minimum (WSM) income have a budget for transport of 15 euros per month. Someone without a special discount can take the example-trip only 6 times per month according to this Nibud system. That way accessibility becomes severely constraint. Hence, transport poverty will also increase in 2019.
